1. Highlands Ep.01

G Season 1 Sun 08 Sep 1h 15m

The course of the seasons, beginning with spring, which sees the hills on fire on fire as the annual muirburn takes place in the Cairngorms. As the flames rise, an osprey returns to a valley near Loch Ness, with its movement captured in super slow-motion at 800 frames per second. Red squirrels and roe deer prepare for the breeding season, while a cataclysmic downpour has major consequences for a family of dippers, whose youngsters are forced to fledge early before the nest is swept away. Narrated by Ewan McGregor.

2. Highlands Ep.02

G Season 1 Sun 15 Sep 1h 20m

John Michie continues his tour of the Highlands, visiting the ancient coronation site at Scone Palace, Perthshire, the ruins of Inverlochy Castle and the nearby town of Fort William in Inverness-shire.

3. Highlands Ep.03

G Season 1 Sun 22 Sep 1h 20m

Ewan McGregor narrates as summer gives way to autumn and winter in the Highlands. From October to February, extreme weather is expected to batter the Cairngorm plateau. For the region's wildlife, these brutal, dark seasons trigger a game of endurance for which they must carefully prepare. Throughout the autumn, Scotland's reindeer bulls fight for dominance in ruts that can last for hours, and hurricane-strength winds lash a seal colony on Copinsay, where vulnerable pups must stay close to their mother if they are to have a chance of surviving. As winter arrives, the Highlands are blanketed in snow and ice, and while the frigid landscape retains its beauty, the moment of truth arrives for mountain hares, ptarmigan and golden eagles (HD)

4. Highlands Ep.04

Following the efforts being made by scientists, conservationists and local people in the Highlands as they work to repair the damage of the past and rebuild wild landscapes and habitats. The programme meets Dave Anderson from Forestry Commission Scotland and his colleague Simon Smith as they tag and monitor red kite and osprey chicks, gaining a unique perspective of the lives of the birds before they fly the nest. Cameras also capture the efforts of the Scottish Wildcat Action Plan team, as well as Paul Lister's project to reintroduce wolves and bears to his Alladale Wilderness Reserve. Last in the series. (HD)
