Poirot is invited by Sir Henry Angkatell for a country weekend at The Hollow, giving Poirot a chance to observe the strange Angkatell family and their relationships to each other. John Christow, a handsome and charismatic doctor, is there with his plain and docile wife, Gerda. But is there a relationship going on between John and Henrietta, a vibrant young artist and member of the Angkatell clan? The charming but slightly batty Lady Angkatell is doing her best to set up Henrietta with Edward Angkatell, to ensure a long line of Angkatells at the family estate. But in comparison to John Christow, Edward appears pale and insignificant and Henrietta, although fond of Edward since childhood, can only repeatedly turn down his marriage proposals. Midge watches on sadly. She has been in love with Edward for as long as he has been in love with Henrietta.

While staying at the Park Lane hotel, Poirot meets Rufus Van Aldin and his daughter, Ruth. Ruth invites Poirot to join in her birthday celebrations at the hotel that night. There she shows off her birthday gift from her father, a magnificent jewel called the Heart of Fire. The same night Poirot befriends a young heiress, Katherine Grey. Katherine is struggling to acquaint herself with the etiquette of her new surroundings and Poirot comes to her rescue. She tells him she is taking the blue train to Nice as she has been invited to visit the Villa Marguerite by her cousin, Lady Tamplin. Poirot is enchanted by Katherine and is delighted when she agrees to his being her companion on the blue train. The following day, anyone who is anybody boards the blue train in Calais. When the train reaches its destination in Nice, Poirot hears the scream of Lady Tamplin. It appears Katherine has been murdered. There is no sign of the Heart of Fire stone, but the strongbox doesn’t appear to be forced. Poirot notices a hair which he traps with tweezers, followed by the last page of a letter from Sister Rosalia at an asylum in Nice, and finally a cigarette lighter.

While visiting a gallery, Poirot bumps into Mr Shaitana, a Mephistophelian like character, who invites him to dinner where he will exhibit real life criminals. During the dinner, Shaitana makes cryptic remarks about past murders and the eight guests are split up to play bridge in two separate rooms - the dining room and drawing room. Mr Shaitana sits in the drawing room quietly by the fire in a large chair with his back to his guests. By midnight Shaitana is dead - stabbed through the heart with a stiletto blade. The murder could have only been committed by one of the four people playing bridge in the drawing room - Major Despard, Dr Roberts, Mrs Lorrimer and Miss Meredith. (D)

Miss Whittaker, the church organist, and Frances Drake, Rowena's feisty daughter, are dismissive of her story but later that evening Joyce is found drowned in an apple-bobbing bucket in the library. It appears that any one of the guests could have slipped out in the dark during the snapdragon game and drowned her.

During the journey Poirot is approached by ruthless American businessman Samuel Ratchett who offers him ten thousand dollars to watch his back but Poirot refuses. Could Ratchett be fearful of the Italian Antonio Foscarelli, English Colonel John Arbuthnot, pushy American Mrs Hubbard or Hungarian diplomat Count Andrenyi and his wife? Poirot awakes the following morning to find the train stuck in a snowdrift and Ratchett dead in his compartment, stabbed a dozen times.

Lieutenant Colin Race is investigating the death of two Navy personnel when a distraught Sheila Webb runs out of 19 Wilbraham Crescent and into arms. Poirot arrives in Dover to help Colin determine if Sheila is responsible for the murder of the middle aged man found stabbed no the sitting room floor. Sheila claims not to know the murdered man or the blind woman who owns the house, Miss Pebmarsh. Miss Pebmarsh was not at home when the murdered corpse was found denies having requested the secretarial services of Sheila by telephone earlier that day. Poirot observes the mounting complications to the case - the four clocks frozen at the time of thirteen minutes past four in the room where the body was found, an unidentified murder victim and a host of neighbours who don’t seem to have seen anything. Colin is determined to find a connection with the recent death of his fiancé and a German mole from within the Navy but in his state of grief he becomes increasingly involved with Sheila Webb. A wall of evidence begins to build against Sheila and the clock ticks for Poirot when another innocent victim is found brutally murdered.
